Posted by imawheatwatcher on November 30, 2010

Every Tuesday I will post a document that needs to be copied and put in your 72 hr. kits. Breaking it down week by week will, hopefully, make it easier to get it DONE!

This week we are gathering Deeds. Don’t forget to keep adding them to your container.

Item of the Week

Posted by imawheatwatcher on November 25, 2010

Happy Thanksgiving!

Every Thursday I will post an “Item of the Week” to assemble our Preparedness kits. Don’t worry if you have just started and we are half way through the list. This will continue on a loop so we will eventually get back to the beginning. Start when you can, do what you can, and we will become prepared.

Right now we are gathering items for: Car Kits

This week get a small copy of the Book of Mormon or a book. There will be times that you are waiting for someone or you are stuck in a bad storm and you will be glad you have something to read. The Book of Mormon is a great thing to have because it will bring comfort if you are in an emergency situation. I decided to have both in my car.

Wheat Watchers Meeting

Posted by imawheatwatcher on November 24, 2010

What a great time we had. The food was delicious and so easy to make. I hope to see you next month.

I showed how to prepare the recipes I have in the Wheat Watchers Cooking Class Recipes booklet I made. I think the homemade Cream of Chicken Soup was my favorite. It was easy, inexpensive, and delicious!

In the booklet there is a recipe for Magic Mix. It is inexpensive and lasts in the fridge for 8 months. We are even going to do an experiment and see if butter powder works as well as real butter. Besides using it for “cream of” soups you can also make an easy white sauce with it.

3/4 c. Magic Mix
1 c. water

In a saucepan, combine Magic Mix and water. Stir rapidly (I use a wire whisk) over medium heat until mixture starts to bubble and thicken. Yield: 1 cup.

Then I made wheat berries and added them to the sloppy joe recipe. It was so good! I loved not having to use as much ground beef and made it healthier. Here are some other ways to use cracked wheat.

1. Use as a meat extender
2. Use cracked wheat instead of rice.
3. Use cracked wheat as a hot cereal in the morning.
4. Substitute cracked wheat for nuts in gelatin or green salads.

Don’t forget next month’s meeting is on December 15th, 7 pm. We will be learning about substitutions we can use in cooking or baking.

Food Storage Recipe Monday

Posted by imawheatwatcher on November 22, 2010

I thought that it would be a great use of this blog to post food storage friendly recipes every Monday. I have gotten several comments that people would LOVE more recipes. If you have a recipe that you love and would like to share, please email it to me!

This recipe is for those that still have some acorn or butternut squash they aren’t quite sure what to do with.

Squash Pie

*This is a sweet pie. Almost like pumpkin just a different veg.

1 pint (2 c) squash- cooked*, sieved or blended (I put my in a food processor)
1 pint milk (2 c)
4 eggs
4 TBS flour
butter- size of egg (approx. 6 TBS)
1 1/2 c sugar
2 TBS ground cinnamon
1/2 TBS ground ginger
1/2 TBS ground nutmeg**
1/2 TBS salt

Mix squash, milk, and eggs, beat together with wire whisk. Mix dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Add to squash mixture. Cook in double boiler, keep the water boiling without it all boiling away-probably on medium-low. Add butter, cook until a dab put on a plate sets, approx. 1 1/2 hr. Pour into cooked pastry shell. Makes 2 pies.

*To cook the squash: Slice it in half, take out the seeds and then wrap the halves in foil. Bake it at 350 degrees until soft, about 45-60 min.
**You can substitute nutmeg with allspice.

This recipe comes from a long line of women on my husband’s side. John asks for this EVERY Thanksgiving!

Enjoy!

Inspirational Sunday

Posted by imawheatwatcher on November 21, 2010

I won’t be posting an Inspirational thought today.

Instead I would like you to take a minute and look at a site, Alpine Food Storage. This site is constantly being updated with new products they are bringing in plus they always have an ongoing order on staples. A new item they just brought in is gluten free pancake mix. Chirine even has samples up there of most things. Plus she has descriptions of items and sometimes has price comparisons.

Every once in a while on a Sunday I will post a site that I think is beneficial in our quest to become more prepared. I hope you will take a minute and go over to her site and check it out.

This week get a couple of diapers and/or feminine products. This will come in handy to absorb things that have spilled or as a dressing for a bandage. So stock them even if you don’t need them anymore!
