Item of the Week

Posted by imawheatwatcher on September 30, 2010

Every Thursday I will post an “Item of the Week” to assemble our Preparedness kits. Don’t worry if you have just started and we are half way through the list. This will continue on a loop so we will eventually get back to the beginning. Start when you can, do what you can, and we will become prepared.

Right now we are gathering items for: Car Kits

This week get a flashlight and batteries. This one will stay in your car at all times. I can’t tell you how nice it is to have a flashlight when your car dies at night and you can’t see what you are looking for.

Wheat Watchers Meeting

Posted by imawheatwatcher on September 22, 2010

We had a small turn out last Wednesday and I must say you guys missed a great salsa demo. It is delicious!

Aubrie I’s Easy Salsa

33-40 tomatoes-skinned*
6 onions
3-6 jalepeno peppers (3″)
3 Anaheim chili peppers
4 green bell peppers
1 red bell pepper
1-2 small habenaros (super hot chili)
Optional: 2-3 sprigs cilantro, coarsely chopped, about 6 chopped green onions. (You can really use any kind of peppers you like. Just swap them in for some or all the peppers listed here).

Coarsley chop above ingredients either by hand or with a food processor and put it all into a large pot. Then add:
1 cup vinegar
2-4 garlic cloves
3 heaping tablespoons salt
1/4 cup sugar or splenda
optional: juice from 2-3 limes

Simmer for 4 hours or until reached desired consistency. Stir occasionally. Process in steam canner for 30 minutes.

*Tip: To peel a tomato easily place them in hot or boiling water for 30-60 seconds. Then shock them in cold water. The skins should peel right off.
*Tip: Use glove for cutting hot peppers. Your eyes will thank you later.
